The Debate Mate Cup!

Posted on: 28th May 2022

Back in April, students from Year 9 and 10, along with Ms Faith and Ms Ali, attended the Debate Mate Cup Competition at the University of Westminster. Students engaged in lively debate on three topics, including violence in the media, using artificial intelligence to make decisions in government and whether public figures should share their personal views on important issues.

Participants did extremely well, each team winning two out of three debates and demonstrating excellence rhetorical skills. In addition, the team won an award for the club with the best overall attendance!

We caught up with participants to find out more about their experience.

Tsion (Year 10)

“I think the trip was enjoyable because I liked how we worked as a team throughout and helped each other through the different rounds. I enjoyed getting out of school to something that would help with my confidence and how well I articulate myself.

Also, I think there was good sportsmanship between the different teams, so we were able to shake hands and congratulate each other after rounds. Some of the topics included whether sports figures should their positions to address key social issues and whether music that glorifies crime should be allowed”.

Hermione (Year 9)

“The trip to Westminster University for the competition was thoroughly enjoyable, having the chance to debate against other schools and get feedback on what to improve on for next time. The atmosphere was very friendly, and we got to socialize with peers from other schools. Summarizing, the trip was a great experience at going into the city and trying something new”.
