MyGovCentral Blog

Posted on: 4th Apr 2022

Our Director of Sixth Form, Ruth Coyle, has been invited to contribute and blog for MyGovCentral, a new online resource designed to help public and voluntary sector professions develop better public services through shared learning and case study led articles, videos and interviews.  The first blog introduced T Levels and the Construction, Design and Planning syllabus, launching September 2022 at La Retraite 6.

In preparation for introducing Construction, Design and Planning to our T Level curriculum, we have been honoured to welcome Karen Vigar, from ISG, a global construction specialist company with over 30 years’ experience in the field.

We have been working alongside Karen to promote the course and introduce the ISG Diploma in Construction at the Sixth Form, enabling young people to gain the right skills to enter this exciting sector and become familiar with the standards, skills, techniques, technologies and ethos of the industry.

“The CIOB is delighted to support the new Diploma in Professional Construction Practice. This qualification will help attract much needed new talent into the industry, which is currently experiencing skills gaps.” Rosalind Thorpe, Head of education at the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB)

Throughout the launch of these programmes, DEC have been incredibly supportive, introducing us to residential property business Grainger plc and Transport for London, who have both hosted visits for our students and offered work experience opportunities, resulting in invaluable insights into the sector.

In addition, The Education and Training Foundation has offered industry placements to our staff, in order to help them to deliver this course, and Canary Wharf Group has hosted one of our teachers on an industry placement. We are very so grateful for their support and the opportunities they have afforded us.

We are thrilled to announce that the DfE have awarded us over £3million in funding for a new T Level building, which will house specialist equipment for the Construction T Level (see page 5 for more details) and that we will be partnering with Wates construction group to develop the curriculum and provide industry placements for our students. This is a fabulous course for aspiring Architects, Civil Engineers and Project Managers.

Our Construction students spoke of their placements:

“I really enjoyed the work experience it opened many locked doors to discovering more opportunities in the career in which I would love to pursue in. I got to communicate with different people throughout the week and it really helped me." — Sophie

“The work experience helped me to really see that architecture is not all about books and whatnot, but you have a lot of fun working with others designing and planning different areas of many countries and has helped me reassure myself that I chose the right career to pursue."  Tiana
