EPAS InfoPoint

We are delighted to have been chosen as a European Parliament Ambassador School as part of the EPAS 2021 Pilot Scheme. Working alongside Mr Regan, our Head of Politics, our junior ambassadors will be taking part in a range of exciting activities and events in order to get students engaging with politics, promoting discussion and debate on topics most relevant to them as young people.

Keep an eye on this page as we update with more exciting opportunities as part of the programme!

Accreditation Achieved!

We're thrilled to announce that, due to the incredible hard work of our Junior Ambassadors, we've now received accreditation for the EPAS programme - La Retraite is an official EPAS partner school!

Only a handful of other UK schools have achieved this accolade, which is a testament to the hard work and perseverance of our students. A massive 'thank you' also goes to Mr Regan, Head of Politics, for encouraging and motivating our students to complete all tasks necessary!

UEFA Euro 2020 Event

To celebrate the UEFA Euro 2020 event (even if we didn't win...) our EPAS Junior Ambassadors have put together an excellent event celebrating the tournament and highlighting how the EU is still to relevant to Britain, not only in terms of football and other sporting events between European countries, but also the ongoing economic and political relationship between the UK and Europe, even after Brexit.

Robert Schuman PSHE Sessions

Excellent work from our EPAS Junior Ambassadors who have produced this great PSHE presentation on Robert Schuman, founding father of the #EuropeanUnion which will be taught in our weekly PSHE sessions to students from all year groups! This was the students' first attempt at creating teaching resources for us to share in school, and we're very impressed with the result.

Robert Schuman, original founder of the European Coal and Steel Community which evolved into the European Economic Community before finally becoming the European Union. Schuman's work has been recognised by Pope Francis, and is now on the path to Sainthood.

Visit from Lord Jonny Oates

Our Year 12 Politics students were joined by Lord Jonny Oates,  Liberal Democrat politician and member of the House of Lords, who spoke about his journey into politics, first joining the Liberal party and then his work on the climate crisis with the Lib Dems. Fascinating and engaging - thank you for joining us!

Model UN

At the end of February, a group of our Year 12 Politics students attended the Model UN weekend event, hosted by the London School of Economics.

Throughout the event, students were assigned to different countries and social issue groups (human rights, defence and protection, world health) and spent the first two days debating with other delegates from across Europe and the rest of the world to create resolutions, amendments, and bills. On the last day, students participated in crisis committee meetings regarding covid and vaccines, resolving hypothetical issues with different nations.

The event was a fantastic experience for our students, with guest speakers from LSE about what the university does, how youth can get involved in politics and information about studying undergraduate courses at the university.

Bianca, Germany; Human Rights Committee“This experience really helped to develop my public speaking skills, was entertaining and really beneficial as a networking opportunity to meet new friends, informative speakers and offer the opportunity for lively debate. There was a lot to take away from it and it encouraged me to research my own country’s foreign policy”.

Safiyah, North Korea; Social Cultural Humanitarian Issues“Attending the Model UN weekend really helped to boost my confidence, see how other people speak and learn from them and I really enjoyed working on my assigned challenging countries and social issues!”

Visit from Alistair Campbell

After Alastair Campbell's brilliant recent visit to La Retraite, he discusses some of the points that were raised during his talk and gave his high opinion of our outstanding students in an article on The New European - click here to read more.
