Our School App Stay connected on the go...
At La Retraite we want to make sure our students have access to opportunities that enrich their already outstanding education. One way we do this is through our Scholarship Programme, which seeks to extend the chance for our students to broaden horizons, develop new interests and extend their skillsets.
The Scholarship Programme runs throughout the school, right from Year 7 through to the Sixth Form, meaning students can access different opportunities as they get older.
In addition to the activities outlined below, students can access a programme of events, workshops, conferences, and trips, including visits to Oxbridge and Russell Group universities, subject-specific conferences, in-house guest speakers, skills and employability workshops, and careers showcases.
Within their Scholarship sessions, students will take part in the following activities.
Years 7 & 8
Students work on building a personal portfolio of the events, achievements, and opportunities they have enjoyed. Working with the Unifrog platform, students will undertake a range of extra-curricular activities which will enable them to grow as individuals and give them experience in leadership, organisation, resilience, initiative, and communication.
Students will undertake Future Learn - structured courses provided by leading universities in a wide range of subjects and topics. Students can choose any course that suits their interests and complete the course in their own time and working at their own pace.
Year 10 students attend Streatham and Clapham High School every Thursday to undertake the GCSE Classics course.
La Retraite 6 Scholarship Programme
At the La Retraite 6, our sixth formers have access to 3 different programmes – Academic, Technical and Sports – each designed to support students with their studies and university/apprenticeship applications.
Alongside a financial bursary, our Academic Scholars receive invitations to collaborate with students at other prestigious local schools, like Westminster and St Paul’s. Participants will also have bespoke experiences at Oxbridge and Russell Group universities and access to a range of initiatives across the curriculum, including Medicine, Law, and other academic pathways.
Sports Scholars all stand out from the crowd with their free La Retraite 6 sports uniform. All participants participate in a nationally recognised coaching qualification.
30 extraordinary students, studying one of our many new T Level subjects, will benefit from a 45-day work placement towards the end of Year 12 at a prestigious City form or other relevant employer. Our huge range of partners offers a wide choice for them. Free transport and lunch allowance is provided during their placement.
Find out about Ruth’s experience on the Scholarship Programme...
I’ve had the opportunity to participate in Target medicine by UCL. This has been very useful as they provide support throughout the medical application process. For example, they help us to write our personal statements, made BMAT and UCAT walkthroughs and did mock interviews with us with doctors. The long-term support of a mentor has been beneficial as you get advice that is specific to you and Is not generalised.
I’ve found the Kings college London MedView Program the most helpful. They provided me with Resources such as UCAT practice books and books to mention in your personal statement and interviews. They provide work experience which is very hard to find, so the program is very beneficial. Despite this being a 2-week program, they have continuously provided support. Additionally, if you apply to Kings, there is special consideration for participants of MedView which is helpful.
Lastly, I have taken part in St. Paul’s School Medicine partnership. They were very useful in helping us to write the BMAT essay and also did mock interviews with us.
